I was aware of this, but nevertheless I could not help but jump straight into this new adventure – that eventually yielded two unexpected results. The first, my relationship with the client became a true friendship, the second, I ended up designing for him the most complex garden, the richest in construction details and botanical collection I had ever conceived until then.

My friend Paolo is a visionary: as soon as we saw his new property together, he had the house demolished and rebuilt, after asking me how to recreate a more sincere connection to the new garden. In the previous arrangement, the only design idea behind the garden was a feeble Sixties-like status symbol show-off, which did not resonate at all with both our ideas of a garden. Also, a large part of the estate was just a fodder field, and this contradictory location made the place feel like it harboured two separate souls. On one side, it looked onto pre-Apennines ravines, on the other side, the opposite view unexpectedly opened towards the plain that gently leads your gaze from the sleepy Emilia countryside in the foreground to far-away industrial sheds alongside the motorway. A scenery that does not match the other side; by night, with its shimmering lights on the horizon, it highlights an urban view which is not that large after all, but may fool you into believing that Los Angeles is looming over there. Relying on a long, pre-existing hornbeam hedge, I designed a Chinese box garden, with hedge walls, 12 rooms full of plant collections, basins, arbours, botanic rarities, a swimming pool, a greenhouse, and a large vegetable garden. This was how Paolo’s simple garden was born, that now belongs to the Grandi Giardini Italiani circuit, and this is why one night, as we sat and sipped wine in the garden, Paolo smiled at me and said: “…maybe we did overdo it?”.

["post-1686","progetti","type-progetti","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
